THE LOVELY TER
The river Ter born in the Catalan Pyrenees and have a special zone for fly fishing catch and release in his mid part under two important dams. The Ter in this area it’s a wonderful river for fly fish. It have very good pools and a lot of shallow and deep streams; the best for a good trout population.
The river have 15 mts width on average and the water are tea color. The size of the trout are medium-large. Most of the trout are Brown trout and also contains rainbow trout with good sizes.
It have a extensive area (20 km) for fly fishing all year and all the seasons. The first 5 km are a fishing area with daily permits (15 permits for day). This streams are the first under the last dam. It’s very good and only it’s allowed the fly fishing rod. All with catch and release.
The rest of the river (15 km) are free all year for fly fish with a strict catch and release. All the river contains a lot of trout and catch trout with measures 40-55 cm are common every day. Rio Ter it’s a lovely river that every fly fisherman that knows it, is astonished to return to fish.
The brown trout are very brave and combative, and the wild rainbows are a super strong fish. Rio Ter it’s a river for dry fly fishing and nymphing. It’s fantastic to fish in it, sylvan (the region is called The Sylvan) and so peaceful.
The essential flies are the ephemeras in 16-20 sizes. Adams, red tags, cul de canard, and spents of ephemeras are the basic flies. Also the sedge deer hair or elk hair in 12-14-16 sizes are good. The nymphs are particularly effectives the chironomid in red color and sunflowers colors. This special nymphs are build for many fly fisherman’s of the region who knows well the fibers for build this nymphs. The tungsten balls for head nymphs with 2.5 gr to 3.5 gr.
The most common rod in Rio Ter are the 10 foot rod in 4 line with a medium or progressive action. Are smooth rods that can fish so well with dry flies and also perfect for nymph fishing. Usually, I fish with two rods. The first one is a 10 foot, 5 line, fast action and the second one it’s a 9 foot rod, 5 line, medium-fast action. I always fish trout with 5 lines, there are my favourites!!!
I think that the rods with five lines have the “body” and the strength for combative and large trout. The tippets recommended are 6X, 5X and 4X. In Rio Ter it’s so easy to catch good specimens with 45-50 cm.
I recommend to use breathable waders with polartec trousers for wading, cause the river it’s cold. Also I recommend to use tungsten studs in the boots and use a wading staff, cause the river Ter is a slippery river. The best seasons for fish this area are autumn and spring. So in winter we can fish very large brown trout specially fishing with streamers and nymphs. The river doesn’t have flow variations for the dams up stream.
In this region the food it’s excellent and the menus and also the restaurant charts are very good. The price for fish for a week with license and permits is 60€ and for 3 days 30€ with license and permits. Rio Ter is an hour drive since Barcelona, all the trip by highway. I love fish trout in River Ter it’s a very good river that you can fish trout all the seasons and all the days.
