Fishing destinations
River Segre
The Segre basin is the most important one of Catalonia. It has almost 80km of river where the predominant species are the brown trout and the rainbow trout. It also has an important population of large barbel. The Segre trouts reach great dimensions and there are quite good chances of catching specimens, some of them trophy-sized.
The trouts of the upper river (about 40km) are brown ones, hugely brave. The river is wide, flowing and a pleasure to fish in. It has many convenient accesses and it is often possible to park the car near the shore. The Segre has several tributaries of great interest, with a large population of brown trout and where catches are usually considerable but not big in size.
The Segre has several sections where fishing is allowed every day of the year due to its characteristics. In the rest of the river, fishing is open from mid-March to mid-October. This river is fished very well in all the modalities: dry fly, wet, nymph and streamer. The river is a fishing preserve in 70% of its length and is largely a “catch and release” area. Free zones are all “catch and release”. The best seasons are summer (July and August) and autumn (September and October). The river is located an hour and a half away from Barcelona. The journey is very comfortable.
River Noguera Pallaresa
This river is the second largest basin of Catalonia and which is situated to the west of the region. The Noguera Pallaresa is a very brave, mighty and good fishing river. It is a river of great beauty and spectacular scenery.
It is a river for experienced fishermen. Its brown trouts are fierce, wild and are not fooled easily. It has a length of 60km and is a fishing preserve in 85% of its length. It has several “catch and release” areas and all the free zone is “catch and release”. In this river fishing is permitted from mid-March to mid-October. The best time of the year is summer (June, July and August) and autumn (September and October).
All types of fishing (dry fly, wet, nymph and streamer) are suitable for this river. In the upper river there is a semi-reservoir area that it is well-known for its very good fishing. This area leaves no fisherman indifferent since fishing is abundant and provides an unforgettable experience both in summer and autumn. In this area it is possible to catch trophy-sized fish and it is quite likely to get good catches.
The Noguera Pallaresa has a major tributary, also for fishing, the river Cardós. This river has a large population of medium-sized trout, very brave and spirited, and difficult to fool. It is a very interesting and entertaining place to fish, and dry fly fishing and nymphing give the best results. The best times of the year to fish are summer (June, July and August) and autumn (September and October).
These rivers are two and a half hours drive away from Barcelona, so it is advisable to take a two- day fishing trip. The accesses to the rivers are plentiful and quite convenient.
Rivers Ter and Freser
This is another important basin of Catalonia and it is located in the east of the region. The Ter is the main river (about 60km) where the predominant species is the trout. In the lower section you will also find a large population of rainbow trout. The Freser is a tributary of the Ter and has a good population of brown trout, the majority of them are native and their overall size is medium.
The Ter has very good fishing areas to spend unforgettable days, with catches of very good size and some trophy-sized. Both rivers provide good fishing and have plenty and convenient access. This river has a large area where trout fishing is allowed every day of the year. In the rest of the river and its tributary, the Freser, fishing for trout is permitted from mid-March to mid-October.
In both rivers fishing can be done well in all categories, especially in dry, nymph and wet fly. In wells and deep wetlands, streamer fishing is also possible. The two rivers have several fishing preserves and are “catch and release” in 80% in total. Free zones are all “catch and release”. The best seasons are spring (March, April, May and part of June), summer and autumn also provide good fishing days. These rivers are located an hour’s drive from Barcelona. The whole journey is on the motorway.
River Llobregat
The river Llobregat and its tributary, the Bastareny, are rivers of medium-small size with a population of brown and rainbow trout. They have a total length of 30km. They are rivers of rainfall patterns as they hardly feed on snow.
The trouts are medium-sized and the rivers are a pleasure to fish, with good access throughout their lengths. They are almost entirely limited by fishing preserves. The fishing season is from mid-March to mid-October. The best months are in spring until mid-summer (April, May, June and July). These two rivers are 50 minutes from Barcelona and the whole journey is on the motorway (free and toll).
Mountain streams & Creeks
Catalonia has a lot of mountain torrents with a large population of brown trout in small and medium sizes. They are rivers for anglers looking for the beauty of the fish and fishing in crystal clear waters. Fishing there is very interesting and entertaining, and the most advisable types of fishing are dry fly and nymph.
In its waters you can catch many beautiful and brave trouts. These rivers are situated at very different distances, which vary between 40 minutes and an hour and a half away from Barcelona on the motorway. They are located in places and landscapes of great beauty. This fishing requires a good physical condition and the accesses are diverse. The fishing season is from mid-March to mid-October, with the best months being April, May and June.
